Huawei introduces the Mate Xs, its 2nd foldable smartphone priced at only 2499

by Jerry

Huawei has just lifted the veil on the Mate Xs, its second foldable smartphone. Very similar to the Mate X unveiled at the MWC 2019, the smartphone is distinguished by a more robust central hinge and its revised technical sheet, based on Kirin 990 5G. You're told out what to know about this new foldable screen smartphone.

At an online conference, Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's mobile division, introduced the Mate Xs, the mate X's successor. As advertised, this is mostly animproved and updated version of its first foldable smartphone. From a design point of view, the smartphone is therefore identical to the first generation. Like the Galaxy Fold, it is a smartphone that converts to a tablet.

? Kirin 990 and quadruple Leica photo sensor

The Mate Xs is built around an 8-inch folding screen when unfolded. The front screen is 6.6 inches (19.5:9). On the back is a 6.3-inch (25:9) secondary screen, right next to the camera. Both screens have a definition of 2480 x 2200 pixels. Richard Yu assures that the screens used are more robust than those of the Mate X. As promised, Huawei has also reworked the Falcon Wing Hinge Mecanism hinge, which allows the foldable screen to fold. This time the structure is designed with Liquid Metal.

At the heart of Mate Xs is a SoC Kirin 990 backed by 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. The battery life is entrusted to a 4500 mAh battery compatible with the 55W Supercharge fast charging. According to Huawei, this technology can recover 85% of autonomy in the space of 30 minutes. True to his habits, Richard Yu compared this performance to the speed of recharging of the Galaxy Fold. According to the manager, the Mate Xs is up to 2.3 times faster than the Fold. Richard Yu also claims, figures to support, that the 5G connectivity of the Mate Xs is also faster than that offered by the Samsung Fold. This is obviously to be confirmed during a test.

On the photography side, Huawei has integrated a quadruple photo sensor designed in partnership with Leica. The camera consists of a 40-megapixel main sensor, an 8-megapixel telefoto module, a 16-megapixel sensor and a ToF deep-range module. As a reminder, the Mate X had to settle for a triple photo sensor.

On the software side, Huawei is banking on an open source version of Android accompanied by the EMUI 10 overlay. Deprived of an Android license, the firm was unable to integrate Google services into its foldable smartphone. Instead, Huawei has installed its own alternative, Huawei Mobile Services. In the absence of the Play Store, you'll have to go to App Gallery to download an app.

?What release date and what price?

Unsurprisingly, the Mate Xs is sold at a high price. Huawei offers the foldable smartphone for 2499 euros. The Mate Xs will be available in Europe and China in March 2020. More expensive than its competitors and private Google applications, will the smartphone succeed in attracting European buyers? We are waiting for your opinion in the comments.
