Nintendo Switch: big stocks for Christmas and a VR headset in the works

by Jerry

In order to meet the high demand during the holiday season, Nintendo plans to increase the production rate of the Nintendo Switch. In addition, a security researcher discovered a VR mode hidden in the console code…

Since its release last March, the Nintendo Switch has been a huge success. The console sells so well that Nintendo struggles to meet demand. The Japanese manufacturer has therefore decided to anticipate the Christmas period by increasing the rate of production.

For example, the firm told the Wall Street Journal that it would do everything possible that anyone who wants a Switch at Christmas can find one in their favorite store. Despite numerous stock outages since the console's launch, Nintendo hopes to sell at least 10 million Switches in one year.

This problem of repeated stock outages is not just about the Nintendo Switch. A few days ago, fans were faced with an almost instant out of stock when the SNES Classic Mini pre-orders opened. It would therefore seem preferable for Nintendo to revise its production policy to move to a tense flow strategy.

Nintendo Switch: a VR mode hidden in code

Alongside this news, security consultant Cody Brocious made a strange discovery while exploring the Switch code. The code in question refers to a mysterious "VR mode." This means that the console could be secretly equipped with virtual reality features…

By sharing his find on the social network Twitter, Brocious has made many users of the console fantasize. It is possible that Nintendo intends to market a virtual reality headset for the Switch in the near future and activate this hidden mode. Players could then play Zelda, Mario or Metroid in VR… a dream for many enthusiasts.

However, it is also possible that Nintendo simply considered offering virtual reality features, before finally changing its mind. This piece of code would therefore be only a trace of this abandoned project. In any case, remember that a user managed to turn his Nintendo Switch into a VR headset.

Just found this while looking at IPC interfaces on the Switch. Iiiiinteresting! #reswitched pic.twitter.com/J3QoKrJWKN
