Samsung has begun rolling out a security update for the last two generations of Galaxy S. It includes the October security patch. Samsung is therefore the first brand to deploy this patch to its users. Recent high-end models, such as the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy S20 FE, are not yet affected.

Samsung has not always been a model for updates. In the mid- and entry-level segments, Android updates were not always well followed (and sometimes they weren't at all). But thanks to Google's extensive work on the operating system architecture, it's now easier for manufacturers to develop and deploy updates. This is particularly the case with security patches.

As if to illustrate this point, Samsung has started rolling out a new update on the Galaxy S released in 2019 and 2020. This update, discovered by our colleagues at SamMobile, includes the latest security patch for Android: it is dated October 2020. This is a real performance on the part of Samsung which seems to us to be the first manufacturer to deploy this patch, even before Google on the Pixel.
The S20 and S10 are the first served
The smartphones involved are the Galaxy S released in the last two years, except for the most recent of them: the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition (or S20 FE). This includes the Galaxy S20, S20 and S20 Ultra,as well as the Galaxy S10, S10 and S10 5G. The Galaxy S10e should also be concerned, although we have not managed to get confirmation of this assumption.
The rollout of the update starts as always with the "open market" versions of smartphones, i.e. those sold outside the operator networks. If you bought your S10 or S20 from Boulanger or La Fnac, you are concerned (even if you took out a subscription at the same time). It will then continue with versions with an operator ROM.
Obviously don't expect any new features in this update. While improvements have certainly been planned to accompany this security patch, they aim to optimize the experience and correct some imperfections. If you haven't been notified of the availability of this update, go to "settings" and then "system update" to run a manual search.
