Huawei Mate 40: how to explain the expected power gain with the Kirin 1020?

by Jerry

A new rumor claims that the Kirin 1020, chipset expected in the future Mate 40, could benefit from a 5 nm engraving, partly explaining the performance gains announced by previous leaks. But a simple gain in finesse would not be the only change to wait. New hearts could also be part of the changes.

Huawei has largely succeeded in proving its ability to remain innovative this year, despite the pressure exerted by the U.S. embargo and very strong competition. Its first place in the Chinese market has strengthened. And his goal of becoming world number one is getting closer. According to a Strategy Analytics study released last week, Huawei accounts for 17.7% of the market in 2019 and remains behind Samsung, which accounts for 21.3% of global sales. The gap between the two firms has never been narrowed ever.

What will happen in 2020? Huawei promises to continue to innovate and develop new products, even if the situation with the United States is still dragging on. While it is clear that the Chinese firm will no longer benefit from Google technologies (including the Play Store) as long as the embargo is active (like the Mate 30 or the recent Nova 6), it will present new smartphones as every year. And this from the beginning of next year.

Many rumors evoke the P40, which should be formalized in early spring. It will be animated by the Kirin 990 that you find today in the Mate 30 Pro. And, slightly further, Huawei should renew its Mate 30 with the Mate 40. A new rumor evokes this launch through the prism of its chipset. According to the latter, the Kirin 1020, already mentioned because it would be engraved in 5 nm at TSMC, would be called Baltimore internally.

What if the Kirin 1020 had new hearts?

Also according to this new corridor noise, the Kirin 1020 would be equipped with future hearts from ARM, called Cortex-A78. Arm's latest high-end architecture is the Cortex-A77. It was formalized in May 2019 and is only used in MediaTek's Dimensity 1000 and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 (the Kryo 585 is based on it). It is very likely that ARM will unveil the Cortex-A78 this year (in the spring). From there to say that he will equip the Kirin 1020, it is unlikely. But not impossible either.

And that would partly explain how Huawei would be able to increase the computing power of its Kirin 1020 by 50% compared to the Kirin 980. Indeed, even if the fine engraving will obviously play a role (the Kirin 1020 would be engraved in 5 nm against 7 nm for its predecessor) in power gain and lower heat emission, a new architecture would also be engraved. The expected power difference between The Snapdragon 855 and The Snapdragon 865 is only 25%. The powerful hearts of these chipsets are based on the Cortex-A75 and Cortex-A77 respectively.
