Galaxy Note 20 Ultra: its great screen technology will soon equip the flagships of the con…

The AMOLED display with variable refresh rate will not remain an exclusive of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Samsung Display announces that the technology will be offered to other brands. The generalization of variable screen refreshment will have a positive impact on mobile autonomy.

Samsung's Galaxy S20, S20 and S20 Ultra screens are all compatible with an improved refresh rate. They are capable of displaying up to 120 frames per second. This is what we call 120 Hzscreens. Since the beginning of the year, this refresh rate at 120 Hz has become one of the standards in the premium and high-end segments. But this technology has a backlash: these screens consume much more energy, since they display more images every second.

With an equal configuration, 120 Hz smartphones have less battery life than 60 Hz smartphones. What we've seen in our tests of the Galaxy S20, S20 and S20 Ultra. Note that it is generally possible to reduce the cooling rate to 90 Hz or 60 Hz. But it's done manually.

Last week, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Note 20 and the Note 20 Ultra. The latter is equipped, at first glance, with a screen identical to that of the S20 Ultra (same size, same definition and same refreshment rate). However, there is a major difference: the refresh rate of the Note 20 Ultra is dynamically variable depending on the content.

An innovation that will not remain exclusive to Samsung

According to information detailed by Samsung Display this week, this slab can go down to 10 Hz or go up to 120 Hz,going through several intermediate stages. And this without a drop in visual quality for the user. As a result, the Note 20 Ultra's screen consumes 22% less energy than the S20 Ultra, for example.

This technology is exclusive to the Note 20 Ultra. But it won't last. Samsung Display confirms that it will soon be marketing screens with the same technology to other customers. Samsung supplies the majority of AMOLED slabs to high-end models sold all over the world, whether Xiaomi, Oppo, OnePlus or Apple. It is no longer a question of whether Samsung will retain the exclusivity of this technology, but how long it will be able to keep it.
