If there were any who still hoped that the PS5 would be retrocompatible with the games of PS3, PS2 and PS1, Ubisoft made it clear that this will not be the case. On a new support page, the publisher hinted that retrocompatibility will be limited to PS4 games.
Sony has already confirmed the retrocompatibility of the PS5 with the PS4 games but has so far remained ambiguous about the case of its consoles of previous generations. Ubisoft has just removed any ambiguity by bringing the precision that was still missing. If you were hoping to access the PS3, PS2 and PS1 games from the PS5,just like the Xbox retrocompatibility, it now seems clear that this is not on the agenda.
The PS5 will be retrocompatible only with the PS4
Ubisoft's support page explains how the publisher plans to manage the transition from PS4 games to PS5. It has been known for some time that its titles will benefit from free migration. Ubisoft also announces the availability of cross-play for both generations of consoles in terms of multiplayer. Finally, the other size precision addresses the issue of retrocompatibility. We learn that the games of the first three generations of the PlayStation will not benefit from an upward compatibility with the PS5.
"Retrocompatibility will be available for supported PlayStation 4 titles, but not for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 or PlayStation games,"according to Ubisoft. At the time these lines are written, the page has been updated. The passage has been removed in the meantime for reasons unknown. The most likely explanation is that Sony may not have appreciated this mention, which prompted the publisher to remove it.
It is also possible that the information only relates to Ubisoft's games, in which case Ubisoft wanted to avoid confusion. A simple change in the passage, however, would have been more appropriate. In any case, the fact that Sony did not highlight the retrocompatibility up to ps1 in its previous communications is the most credible proof that players will not benefit from it. Microsoft, for its part, has made it clear that the xbox Series X's retrocompatibility will be complete, right down to the first-generation Xbox.
The latest news is that Sony will hold a conference on September 9, 2020. This will no doubt be an opportunity to discover the price and release date of the PS5 whose pre-orders will be by invitation. A pre-registration campaign was opened a few days ago. One thing is certain, all the information that was still missing will be revealed shortly.
