Galaxy Z Fold 2: Samsung hopes to sell twice as many foldable smartphones as in 2019

by Jerry

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will be produced between 700,000 and 800,000 copies, a leak from South Korea reveals. Samsung is clearly hoping to sell twice as many foldable screen smartphones as last year.

By the end of 2019, Samsung sold between 400,000 and 500,000 Galaxy Folds worldwide. Available in very limited quantities, the brand's first foldable smartphone has especially seduced early adopters thanks to its innovative form factor. Less than a year later, Samsung lifted the lid on the Galaxy Z Fold 2, a new iteration designed to erase the flaws of its predecessor and appeal to a wider range of buyers. This new version abandons the notch, opts for a stronger hinge and a more robust and 120 Hz compatible foldable screen. It is offered at the same price as the first Fold: 2020 euros.

Samsung would sell more than 3 million smartphones this year

According to information published by Yonhap, a South Korean news agency, Samsung is expected to produce up to 800,000 Galaxy Z Fold 2s this year. In order to reduce production costs, the manufacturer will manufacture part of the units in factories located in Vietnam and Brazil.  "The manufacture of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 from foreign factories proves that Samsung's rate of return has stabilized. It seems that Samsung is now trying to reduce the production costs of its foldable smartphones," said a source close to the industry.

Taking into account sales of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Galaxy Z Flip, Roh Kyoung-tak, an analyst at Eugene Investment and Securities, estimates that Samsung will sell up to 3 million foldable smartphones this year. Thanks to an "increasingly diverse catalogue", Samsung could even sell up to 8 million foldable phones next year.

To appeal to more and more consumers, the manufacturer is currently working on 3 other foldable smartphones: the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Z Fold S and Z Fold Lite. More affordable, the Z Fold Lite would be marketed at a starting price below 1000 euros in early 2021. With this strategy, can Samsung establish itself as the leader in the foldable smartphone? We are waiting for your opinion in the comments.
