MWC 2024: Lenovo shows laptop with transparent screen

by Jerry

Lenovo confirmed at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 the concept of a notebook with a transparent screen. The laptop, dubbed the ThinkBook Transparent Display, has no release date and may never hit stores. However, some of the technologies shown by the manufacturer may debut in notebooks that will be released later this year.

Lenovo’s transparent screen laptop surfaced in rumors a few weeks ago. Now, with the company’s confirmation, we know more details and features of the concept.

Starting with the star: the transparent screen. The 17.3-inch panel uses microLED technology to generate the image on the display. The advantage of using microLEDs is that they have a longer lifespan when compared to OLED panels.

What’s more, this technology allows for a screen with the higher screen brightness than OLED panels. Lenovo claims that the concept maintains a good display in both indoor and outdoor spaces, with a peak brightness of 1,000 nits.

In the photo leaked weeks ago, one detail caught our attention. The stylus in the promotional artwork indicated that the laptop would have some feature with this accessory — said and done. The keyboard part can be used by the stylus. To gain drawing space, the keyboard is able to erase itself, allowing the user to have a 17.3-inch area to use the stylus.

The purpose of the laptop with a transparent screen is to integrate artificial intelligence with computers. A Lenovo representative told WindowsCentral that AIs would be able to generate content that is prepared for transparent screens, or that fits the environment by taking advantage of that display.

Lenovo has no plans to launch the laptop. Since it’s a concept, it’s likely that it will never make it to stores. However, the keyboard feature that disappears to give more space for the use of the stylus is something possible in notebooks that the company wants to launch later this year. On a smaller scale, the transparent screen can enter the edges of the next models, leaving a customizable space for consumers — very “aesthetic”.
