If you're a player, you've probably attended the official presentation of the Playstation 5. A conference that proved rich in content and announcements, with GTA 5, Gran Turismo 7, Horizon 2 or Resident Evil 8. The final surprise is obviously the revelation of the design of the console. Design that has already inspired thousands of memes on Twitter. The Digital Foundry website, renowned for its detailed analyses of the graphic quality of video games, scrutinized the various excerpts of the PS5 titles broadcast during the 80-minute show.

In a video debrief, Digital Foundry journalists claim that the vast majority of games presented are aimed at the 4K 30 FPS. Only a handful of them could offer 4K 60 FPS. To support his theory, Digital Foundry explains that it analyzed the resolution and framerate of the gameplay sequences.

A dynamic resolution system

Thus, some games seem to use a dynamic resolution system, which would lower the visual quality to around 1500p,and this to maintain an acceptable framerate around 30 FPS. Many games will also be displayed in native 4K,not the upscaled 4K as can be found on PS4 Pro.

For Digital Foundry, it is clear that Sony wants to prioritize visual quality on PS5,at the expense of fluidity. This strategy, if proven, is in total opposition to That of Microsoft, which targets the 60 or 120 FPS in 4K HDR with the Xbox Series X."The focus on extreme details also highlights the priorities of most of the developers featured here – while Microsoft is talking about 4K 60 FPS and even 120 FPS as hardware design goals, the vast majority of titles in yesterday's PS5 presentation focused on 30 FPS," says Richard Leadbetter, Digital Foundry's editor-in-chief.

According to Digital Foundry, the following games will be in 4K 30 FPS:

  • Rachet and Clank: Rift Apart
  • Stray
  • Returnal
  • Kena as Bridge of Spirits
  • Demon's Souls (possibility of a 60 FPS mode)
  • Destruction Allstars
  • Horizon: Forbidden West
  • Oddworld: Soulstorm

The following games would be in 4K 60 FPS:

  • Gran Turismo 7
  • SackBoy: A Big Adventure
  • GodFall
  • Astro's Playroom
  • Resident Evil VIII: Village

Note that several titles are missing to the call like Hitman 3, Solar Ash, GhostWire Tokyo or the very promising Project Athia.
