Samsung has just launched mass production of the first 16GB RAM LPDDR5 memory chip for mobile. Given the manufacturer's habits, we can expect these new chips to enter the Galaxy S21 (S30), the brand's next high-end smartphones.
As announced several months ago, Samsung has just signed the start of mass production of LPDDR5 memory chips equipped with 16GB of RAM. As a reminder, the world's leading smartphone company inaugurated the LPDDR5 format in early 2019. This first iteration of chips was then content with 12GB of RAM. At the time, Samsung made no secret of its intentions to increase the maximum amount of RAM in the coming years.

Record transfer speed
"The LPDDR5 16GB elevates the industry to a new threshold and overcomes a major obstacle in the development of DRAM./ We will continue to expand our range of high-end DRAM and exceed customer demands, while keeping the lead in the memory chip market," said Jung-bae Lee, Executive Vice President of Dynamic DRAM (Random Access Memory).
Engraved in 10 nm thanks to extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV), memory chips are currently produced at Samsung's factories in Pyeongtaek, South Korea. According to the manufacturer, the components are mainly dedicated to 5G smartphones doped with artificial intelligence. Chips offer the fastest transfer speed on the market: 6,400 megabits per second (Mb/s). This is 30% faster than 12GB RAM variants. "The LPDDR5 can transfer 10 5GB Full HD movies, or 51.2GB of data, in a second," Samsung said.
Finally, the new chips designed by Samsung are thinner than ever. "The LPDDR5 case is 30% thinner than its predecessor, allowing 5G smartphones as well as foldable devices to offer more features in a slim design," the Samsung statement said.
