Galaxy S8 and S8+, almost 5 years old, receive updates after end of support

by Jerry

Samsung has ended support for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ models this year, but apparently it wasn’t the end of the line: it still releases some security updates from time to time. The newest appeared on Friday (17) for users from France.

The new firmware has the code G95xFXXUCDUK1 and will possibly reach other markets in the coming days. It features the November 2021 patch, which features fixes for dozens of privacy and security vulnerabilities.

The security update comes after Samsung announced the end of support for the handset in May, more than four years after the model’s release.

In thesis, this meant that the device would not receive any more fixes, not even to fix vulnerabilities. It’s just that’s not really what happened.

The two smartphones returned to gain corrections in September. Distribution began in Bolivia. The G95xFXXUCDUE1 firmware featured the May 2021 patch and fixed security and privacy issues.

The Galaxy S8 and S8+ have officially lost support this year, but the lack of updates comes well before. In November 2019, Samsung published its list of devices that would receive Android 10, and neither was on it.

Both were released with Android 7.0 Nougat in March 2017 and updated to version 9, also known as Pie, in February 2019. The Galaxy Note 8 also stopped there.

In October last year, the South Korean company released a new policy and now promises three years of operating system upgrade for several of its smartphones and tablets.

If the Galaxy S8 and S8+ have lost their official support status (although they continue to receive updates like today’s), the same cannot be said of other related models. This is the case with the Galaxy S8 Active and the Galaxy S8 Lite.

Active was a flat-screen version with increased strength. It continues to receive quarterly security updates. The S8 Lite, a cheaper and simpler model, still gets fixes twice a year.
